Saturday night’s match-up was the WLA game of the week and it lived up to its billing. The first place Victoria Shamrocks wanted to avenge their only loss of the season to Langley on June 19th (Langley 13 – Victoria 12).
Victoria opened the scoring early in the game but Langley’s Rob Van Beek tallied on the next possession. It was a theme to last most of the night. Most times Victoria scored Langley answered with a goal of their own. Victoria took the lead ½ way through the tightly played period with Langley’s Alex Turner scoring on a delayed penalty (something Langley did 3 times in the night). Then a short handed breakaway goal by Van Beek and another delayed penalty goal by Rob Buchan ended the period with Langley up 4-2.
The second period saw Victoria scoring early with Langley’s Jamie Lincoln answering with Langley’s 2nd short handed goal of the night. Victoria came to back to within one (1) midway through the game but Stephan Leblanc answered with two goals in Langley’s next two possessions. Period ended with Langley maintaining a two goal lead at 7-5.
Third period stared similarly to the first two as Victoria scored quickly but Langley’s Joe Vetere (the steal of the 2009 WLA draft – he was selected in the fourth round) scored on a break after the face-off. Kyle Belton stole the ball on Victoria’s next possession and scored on a great individual effort increasing Langley’s lead to three (4) goals. After a Victoria goal, Graedon Cornfield scored next time Langley had the ball. Half-way through the third Victoria scored their only back to back goals of the game but again Langley answered with another goal by Kyle Belton. Garrett Billings finished Langley’s scoring on a play set up by Todd Stockdale.
The game ended Thunder 12 to Shamrock’s 10. Langley’s veteran goalie Joe Bell received the game’s first star stopping 36 of the Shamrock shots. Stephan Leblanc was named third star for his timely goals (2) and three (3) assists on offense.
